Very Merry, Very Happy!

Whew, it’s that time once again.  Hopefully, you have most of the obligations of the season out of your way, and can focus on getting a much deserved reprieve.  We will be chugging along up until the last minute, and then it’s time with family and good food for us!  We just want to take this time to wish everyone the happiest, most peaceful, and love filled Hanukkah, Christmas & New Year!  We wouldn’t have gotten here without you all…and we continue to be so very grateful for your patronage, support, and most of all, your friendship.

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.”

Everyone Loves a Good Comeback Story

There was a video we saw the other day of a stray dog, at the brink of death, rescued and given a chance at a new life.  Now, of course the internet is filled with stories like this.  There’s a reason for that, we love a story of rebirth!  Maybe that’s why the holiday season fills us with such joy.  We see family we maybe haven’t been able to spend time with for awhile.  We get to share our stories of the year; what happened, who did what and why.  Yet, it’s the New Year that comes up right behind it, and gives so many the opportunity to begin again…to experience their own sense of renewal.  A new year is a chance to reset the playing table, to wash off the mistakes or misses of the year and make changes for the better.

Who doesn’t love a good makeover story?

Maybe that’s why so many of us are transfixed by the before and after; it reflects our very human drive to get better.  Well, there are smaller versions of the makeover story happening over and over again here at Forgotten Treasures.  We take a look around, find our stray pieces, and make sure they get the rebirth they deserve.  For us, it’s a labor of love, but it’s also a small gesture of environmental appreciation.  For every brand new laptop found during black friday, we have an up-cycled desk for it to sit on, for every flat screen TV sold, we’ve got the perfect redesigned media center, and for every new place setting, the ideal refinished china cabinet.

It’s a way to be eco conscious, sure, but it’s also finding value from the past.  Because for each piece we up-cycle, for every customer that takes it home, there is a story there.  Stories that are meant to be passed down, from generation to generation.  So, as we settle into the winter months, we hope to hear all of your stories, and to incorporate them into small legacies for you to keep and cherish for years to come.

Special Holiday Giveaway (12/1-12/21)

This dresser could be yours!

Things have been really picking up now that the holiday season is in full swing!  We put on our “Santa’s little helper” hats and got to work making sure the store was bursting with cheer…and, we think the man with the bag would be very pleased.  Over the past year, we have been very blessed.  Our customers and friends have been the axis upon which our business turned and we couldn’t and wouldn’t be where we are without their loyalty, support, and trust.  That’s why every single piece we put our hands on, is given the love and attention we would want in a piece for our own family; our customers are merely an extension of that family for us. Because of that, it’s our goal that nothing but the best work leaves our doors, destined for their new homes.  Some of the ways we would like to say “thank you” to you all, is to offer all sorts of fun contests, raffles, and giveaways over the holiday season & new year.  Our first contest is a giveaway for this cool, retro dresser you see above.

In one of our upcoming posts, we will be looking at the fun trends coming up for Spring 2015.  (I know, it seems like we’re still in the middle of winter…and we are…but that’s how the fashion world works, and we are always working to be on trend with them).  So, some of the upcoming trends we love are a return to rich, energetic colors & the incorporation of geometric shapes into home decor.  The lucky winner of our giveaway will walk out with just that in a dresser; an on-trend piece, valued at $150.00, that’s all ready to go and spice up any room with these exact, fun fashion forward characteristics!

So HOW can you enter for your chance to win?

Here’s the details from our Facebook page:

We cordially invite to the store between December 1st through December 21st to fill out an entry form for your chance to win this dresser (one entry form allowed per customer, per day). We will be pulling the winning name & announcing it on Facebook on December 21st, so make sure to come by, make an entry, and stay tuned to our Facebook page to see if you won!

Don’t Let Distressing, Distress You!

Beautiful but so expensive

Beautiful, but so expensive!

When looking for the perfect piece of furniture to complete a room or living space, there are so many factors to consider.  Style, color, function…and, of course (most importantly) price.  Who doesn’t love the store Restoration Hardware?  They always carry such vintage styled, functional furniture.  However, the prices leave much to be desired.  Having a beautiful coffee table is divine, but spending a nice chunk of your savings account is de trop!

The shabby chic aspect of distressed furniture has come in and out of style many times over the past few seasons.  It remains a constant in any home decorators wheelhouse because of its versatility and malleability into any design proposal. Whether as an accent piece or anchor piece, the gentle, antique nature of distressed furniture adds character to any room or layout.

When selecting which piece to work with, we first always try to make sure its of the utmost quality and function. Every corner is inspected, considered and factored into how we will approach arrival at the final overall look.  When distressing a piece, one of the aspects that is investigated is what parts of the unit would actually show wear and tear.  You never want to just go in willy nilly and just start working without planning.  A good design strategy is the only way to ensure you’re effectively teasing out that detailed beauty through proper technique. Ultimately, the final price point is developed with the consideration that everyone wants a beautiful house, with quality pieces, at a reasonable price.

So, what types of distressed furniture pieces look good and where can you use them?

Below are just a few inspiration pics from our inventory to get you on the right track.  Click the images for more information…

Let There Be Light!

Daylight savings time is here again for us.  Time to turn back the clocks and say goodbye to those sunny evening hours.  However, it’s also the time of year for cuddling up by a flickering fire or snuggling into bed with a good book.  Any way you slice it, when the clocks go back…you’re gonna need some light.

When we think of chandeliers, its hard not to imagine the ornate, enormous, fixtures that hang above luxurious Edwardian dining tables or within the cavernous rooms at Versailles!  The origin of the word chandelier actually comes from the French word “chandelle” and basically means “candle holder”. Well, that’s pretty provincial for such an ornate seeming fixture, isn’t it?

When we here at Forgotten Treasures find these little gems, its always a fun challenge to see what direction we can take them in.  Depending on the time of year, colors that are trending, or even patterns that are popular, these diverse fixtures can burst with personality.  Its quite a long way from illuminating church cathedrals or castles, but we like to think of the chandelier as the axis which home decor can revolve around.  Our signature logo is, after all, you guessed it…a chandelier.

Look at these upcycled gems!

Look at these upcycled gems!

Any of the chandeliers featured above would work wonderfully adding a touch of class to a small walk-in closet; placed in a corner reading nook; or grouped together with mixed styles over a dining table to give off an eclectic combination of light!  The possibilities are nearly endless.  The point is, however, that the rules of convention no longer apply when it comes to decorating with lighting.  Feel free to mix it up and break loose of the expected!

For fall, we are working on all sorts of fun and charming new pieces.  If you’re in the area, feel free to come over to the shop to see, first hand, all of our furniture and decor pieces.  If you’re from out of town, you can stop by our Pinterest page, Facebook, or Twitter feed to see some of the fun and interesting trends & pieces we’ve discovered.
